A young lawyer has been saved from the brink of financial ruin by a brilliant team of lawyers who fought the legal battle in court and made it possible.
Key points:Delano Law Office was founded by lawyer Paul Delano in 2006 and it now employs around 40 peopleLawyer Paul Delanoe says the office is one of the most successful in the country”We’re one of Australia’s most successful organisations and have a pretty good reputation for getting things done,” he said.
“The most successful organisation in Australia, and one of our best-performing organisations, is the Delano Law Centre, which is in Sydney.”
So it’s very gratifying to be able to say that we’re one [of the best organisations] in Australia and to say the people that have worked at Delano have done a great job and I’m proud of them.”‘
You can’t win’Lawyer’s passion for equality and equality for everyone was evident in his fight for equality at the federal election in 2013.”
I was absolutely determined to be the best advocate for all Australians regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, age, ability, disability related disability or any other category,” Mr Delano said.
He lost his job as a lawyer in his own workplace after the Federal Court ruled that Mr Delano was discriminated against because of his sexual orientation.
He started a fundraising campaign, which he says brought in almost $20,000 and he has been a member of a local LGBT+ club.”
It was really inspiring, it was like a dream come true,” Mr delano said of the fundraising campaign.”
At the end of the day I think there are people that are just really looking for something to do and they don’t know how to get it.
“Mr Delanoo said his charity, Equality Matters, has also been a significant financial success, with more than $50,000 raised so far.”
There’s a whole lot of money coming in that the organisation can reinvest into the community,” he explained.”
Our focus is to make sure that we can keep the organisation going and we’re always looking to invest in the community.
“Mr delano and his team have been a champion for equality since the law firm was founded in 2006, with the first law students coming from the law profession in the 1990s.
He said the community was excited about the new legal centre’s new building, which will have a capacity of 40 people.”
We’ve got a wonderful building, it’s going to be very nice and it’s got a good mix of offices and accommodation for the staff, a good staff accommodation, a very well-designed reception centre,” Mr DELANO said.
Mr Delano’s passion has been for equality for many years.”
For a while in my life I’ve always been involved in some sort of community service, or I was involved in a variety of things, I’ve been involved with a range of organisations and I’ve never been a political activist,” he recalled.”
A lot of the time you’ve got to be involved in something in order to be successful, it seems to be one of those things.
“He said he felt strongly about the equality issue and it was the result of his love for equality.”
In my view, we have a very big problem and we have to do something about it,” he concluded.
