PHOENIX (AP) A Phoenix police officer has been charged with a felony for throwing a punch that injured an inmate in the head.
Gordon Law Office Art and Gordon Law Office said the officer was on duty when he used a baton on an inmate at the Gilbert County Jail on Jan. 31.
It’s not clear if he was on patrol that day or if he had been assigned to patrol the jail that day.GORDON LAW OFFICE ART said in a statement that the officer acted “recklessly” and that the “incident should never have happened.”
He added that he is “deeply sorry for any injuries he may have caused.”
The officer faces up to six years in prison if convicted of a felony charge.
A spokeswoman for the Arizona Department of Corrections said in an email that the department will review the case.
Gordon said the incident was a matter for the city attorney and the Phoenix Police Department.
He added that the Phoenix police department has a long history of treating its citizens with respect.
He said he has not been charged.
