The Trump administration fired Greenberg Law Office’s attorney on Monday, alleging he violated the Constitution by attempting to prevent a federal judge from overseeing the ongoing Russia investigation.
Greenberg Law, which specializes in criminal defense and civil liberties issues, said the firing violates the Trump administration’s rule barring attorneys who “undermine the administration’s policies or conduct from participating in the Government of the United States.”
Greenberg lawyer Matthew Dowd was fired from his job after The New York Times reported in March that the Trump Justice Department asked his firm to stop defending Trump during the Russia investigation, which is being led by special counsel Robert Mueller.
Dowd represented a client who was fired by Trump in the first months of his presidency.
Greenburg attorney Matthew DowDowd says he’s “devastated” that his former employer has been forced to fire him, and said he’s considering filing a lawsuit against the Trump White House.
“I think it’s a very big deal,” Dowd told Business Insider.
“I’m deeply disappointed in what’s happened here.
It’s not good.
It was a great company and a great team and I wish they would have stayed on.”
The president’s lawyers said they would continue to defend the president in court.
“The president has a strong legal position and has maintained that position for nearly two decades,” a White House lawyer said in a statement.
“The White House will vigorously defend the President’s constitutional rights and continue to fight for the American people’s constitutional right to an open, transparent and free election.”
Greenburg Law has represented some of the most high-profile cases of the Trump era, including his firing of former FBI director James Comey and his effort to fire the special counsel.
The White House also has a legal team dedicated to defending the president against the Russia probe.
Greenstein Law, whose former president is John Dowd, is a firm that has defended Trump on numerous fronts including the 2016 presidential campaign and his controversial travel ban.
Dowdy previously worked for Greenberg, a law firm that also represents Trump on several other fronts, including the Trump Organization and the Trump University.
