Lawyer Nelson Law Office in New York City filed a complaint against New York Police Department over the death of Michael Collins, a Bronx man who was struck by a police car in September of 2015.
According to the complaint, Collins was stopped by NYPD officers on July 1, 2015 for a traffic violation in Queens.
Collins was taken to the NYPD’s Brooklyn precinct and allegedly told to get out of the car.
He refused, prompting the officers to open fire.
According the lawsuit, Collins died from a bullet wound to the head.
Collins’ family is asking for $20 million in damages.
The lawsuit says Collins was killed after the NYPD “failed to render assistance” to him.
Collins is one of at least four people killed by police in New Jersey since the beginning of September.
In March of 2016, a New Jersey police officer shot and killed Anthony Johnson after Johnson was hit by a stray bullet in a residential neighborhood in Newark.
Johnson was then shot and wounded while trying to flee the scene.
In February of 2018, a police officer in Queens shot and injured an unarmed man who he claimed was running away from him.
The man died later at a hospital.
In December of 2017, a woman was killed in a New York police car while attempting to cross a street in Brooklyn.
The police department is still investigating the incident.
Collins, the brother of the alleged victim, was not arrested and has not been charged with any crime.
The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case.
